A strong low-pressure system will bring heavy rainfall, gusty winds and potential flooding beginning this evening, January 8, 2024, continuing through tomorrow, January 9, 2024. The areas most likely to be affected are the eastern half of North Carolina and the Southern Mountains.

Georgia: Severe Thunderstorms and Tornados – January 8, 2024

A strong storm system moving through Georgia this evening, January 8, 2024, is forecasted to produce strong storms, with a possibility of damaging winds and isolated tornadoes. Heavy rain could lead to flash flooding tomorrow, January 9, 2024,

Details:

*   Heavy rain could lead to flash flooding and river flooding. 1-3 inches are expected with locally greater amounts, particularly across the northeast mountains. *   Strong to severe thunderstorms will pose a risk for damaging wind gusts and tornadoes, especially along and south of a line from Columbus to Athens. *   A High Wind Warning has been issued for portions of Northern Georgia. Wind gusts could exceed 50 mph, especially across higher elevations. A Wind Advisory has been issued elsewhere for winds gusts to 40 mph.
